Effects of HGH on People of Short Stature

Children of young ages suffering from real HGH deficiencies are the ones who benefit the most from human growth hormone injections. These children are plagued with a number of ailments such as stunted growth or very slow growth and delayed skeletal maturation. Unfortunately, children who are born different than others, not only have to contend with the illness itself but also with the cruelty of other children. The most common reason that parents give for choosing to go with HGH injections is the fact that their child is cruelly treated at school. It is recommended that children start on the hormone injections as early as possible. Any time before puberty will give the child the greatest chance of reaching a normal height. Once the pubescent growth spurt during the ages of 13 and 14 is completed, the child’s bones fuse and the HGH injections no longer yield the same results.

Human growth hormone patients will still be considered short even if the treatment is a success. Researchers report that the greatest increase in height is seen in those who start the youngest and those who were the shortest at commencement of treatment./p>

HGH therapy has yielded moderate results in normal children of short stature, which claim to need this kind of therapy due to the psychological impact and or stress of being short. Although this is a common reason given, there is no data as of yet that can tie short stature with any kind of dangerous psychological ailment. Experts recommend extreme caution when employing treatment for this purpose. HGH therapy has not been proven as successful in the treatment of short stature for patients NOT suffering from growth hormone deficiencies./p>

Researchers have reported great strides in the treatment of Turner Syndrome using this kind of therapy. Studies done on over 2000 girls suffering from this disease produced height results much higher than expected. The average final height of all who participated was 150 cm, which is almost 6 cm above the projected height at adulthood. This is not to say that all participant’s results were as satisfactory, outcomes still vary greatly from person to person. As for the psychological impact of HGH therapyit still remains to be seen, although there is a great probability that it could vary as much as the physical results./p>

HGH has also proven effective in the treatment of children suffering from intrauterine growth retardation. If treatments begin before the age of five, it may be possible to maximize height throughout the childhood years but not as an adult./p>

There is still a lot of variance in the results achieved using HGH injections to treat children. Those seeking therapy for treatment of hormone deficiency, Turner Syndrome and idiopathic short stature do not, as a rule, achieve normal adult height. An overall increase in height is seen in many cases and there are those who can obtain exceptional results, but as mentioned earlier, results can vary greatly from child to child. The efficacy of HGH injections in the normal “short” child is still to be determined as there is no data that suggests the long-term psychological benefit of height. In reality, greater caution must be taken with the psychological effect that unrealized expectations may have on a child if his or her desired results cannot be achieved. This is more likely to be the case, since results are not nearly as impressive in treating normal children./p>

Unfortunately HGH treatments come with a list of side effects, which include, fluid retention, carpal tunnel syndrome, pseudotumor cerebri and slipped capital epiphysis. Before the inception of the HGH synthetic, which came about in 1985, natural HGH was obtained from cadavers to treat patients. Of the 8000 treated prior to 1985, as reported by the National Hormone and Pituitary Program, 22 developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a fatal brain disorder. Recombinant HGH has proven to be a safer exogenous source of hormone/p>

Children are this world’s most important resource. Keeping them safe, happy and most of all healthy is a great priority in the scientific community, and developments in the study of HGH for this purpose show great promise. This being said, great care must also be taken to minimize the possibility of side effects when employing innovative treatments. Caution must also be taken to measure the psychological impact of new science. Potentially harming a child emotionally in this process would defeat the purpose of trying to help him or her physically. /p>
